Growing Stagnation of Youth Not in Education or Employment

In Latin America, the situation of young people who are neither studying nor working has reached alarming levels, according to a recent report from Bloomberg Linea. This phenomenon, known as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), has drawn the attention of economists and politicians, who warn about the social and economic implications it entails.

The report estimates that over 20% of young people in the region find themselves in this situation, a percentage that has grown in the last decade. The causes are varied: lack of job opportunities, precarious labor markets, and, in many cases, educational systems that fail to prepare young people for the challenges of the current job market.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this crisis, as many businesses closed or reduced their workforce, leaving a significant number of young people without options. Additionally, the accelerated digitization has created a gap between the skills young people possess and those required by employers. Many young individuals find themselves trapped in a cycle of discouragement and hopelessness, which can have lasting effects on their mental and social well-being.

Governments in the region are under pressure to act. Some initiatives have been launched, such as training and job placement programs, but results so far have been limited. Experts suggest that a more comprehensive approach is needed, involving collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as a critical review of educational systems.

As the situation worsens, it is crucial that effective measures are adopted to address this issue. If not, Latin America could face a future with a generation of disillusioned youth lacking the tools necessary to contribute to the economic development of their countries.
